Childhood and Adult Sexual Trauma

Childhood and Adult Sexual Trauma

Abstract

Sexual abuse is a major problem in the US. Research shows that one third of all females and one fifth of all males have suffered sexual abuse under the age of 18. Sexual abuse in children produces trauma that is deeper because this is also a betrayal of the child’s trust in adults to provide a safe environment. The indifference and disrespect of police and the courts for victims of sexual abuse of all ages, with blaming of the child for inviting the abuse, often produce further traumas. Fortunately, there are now therapeutic methods available to relieve much or all of the trauma residues from sexual traumas. These include Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Energy Psychology (EP) therapies such as Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). Thought Field Therapy (TFT), Transformative Wholistic Reintegration (TWR) AKA Wholistic Hybrid of EMDR and EFT, and others. The EP approaches can be used by traumatized people as self-treatments, making these available for relief of trauma symptoms whenever and wherever needed.
